The winemaker and his history

Welcome to Domaine Villa Maria, the most decorated New Zealand family estate in the country.

It all started in 1961, when Georges Fistonich rented a vineyard of less than one hectare in Mangere south of Auckland and made his first wine.

Since then, Villa Maria has grown to become one of the best-known estates in the country. Several times named “Winery of the Year” in New Zealand and praised by the international press, Villa Maria has vineyards in the best wine-growing regions of the country.

The estate is also very largely involved in eco-responsible environmental approaches and in organic viticulture.

A word from the winegrower

“The name Villa Maria was coined, very aptly, after a few drinks with friends. Internationally, Villa is a suitable name for a house and Maria is a very common name among Croatian women. The combination of the two had both a family feel and overall appeal.”
